Mrs. Ruth King Gore

Ruth King Gore, a resident of Rodgers Forge for 72 years, died July 11 at Pickersgill Retirement Center in Towson. She was 100 years old. A lifelong Baltimorean, she was born on East Biddle Street and later moved to Bonner Avenue. She attended Forest Park High School. After graduating in 1933, she volunteered at the Enoch Pratt Library, where she worked in the catalog department. This experience led to her first job at the Maryland Casualty Company. As a young girl, she became interested in the church and its activities. Participating in church plays was a special joy for her. In 1936, she married the late Jesse Gore. They moved to Rodgers Forge in 1939 where they shared more than 50 years together. After moving to the Forge, they joined Ascension Lutheran Church. Although she was active in many aspects of church life, the altar guild was especially meaningful to her. The church remained an important and meaningful part of her life until the end. She was a member of Ascension for 70 years. Girl scouting was another important part of her life. She began as a Brownie troop leader and her enthusiasm led her to become President of the Central Maryland Council, serving two terms from 1963-1968. Scouting always remained near and dear to her heart. She was also a long-time member and past president of the Towson Women’s Club, attending annual luncheons even in her late nineties. With this organization, she enjoyed many service activities; those involving gardening and birding were of special interest. As an avid birder, she was a member of the Audubon Society. If she wasn’t gardening, you could find her with binoculars watching a bird up close. She traveled a great deal and never said no to an invitation. Although blind in her later years, she continued to keep abreast of news and literature with talking books, listening to several books a week on tape. Friends who visited her at Pickersgill always found the conversation interesting. A memorial service will be held August 15 at 2 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church, 7601 York Road in Towson. Mrs. Gore is survived by a son, King Gore of Gainesville, GA, a daughter Karen Kyle of Sykesville, 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and a loving niece. Her son Richard Gore died in 1996.
