Mrs. Rena V. Hurd

Rena Velice Smith Johnson Hurd, age 89 of Marriottsville, Maryland went to her Heavenly home to be with her eternal Father at 8:50 am on Sunday, December 23, 2018 in the home of her step-daughter Rosa and husband Robert Gosnell. She was born the daughter of the late Bigie Smith and Lucenda Seymore Smith on April 8, 1929 in Blackwater, Virginia. Mom was a homemaker all her life, as well as a gardener, and made quilts. People from near and far sat at her table to enjoy her great home cooking of which she made with great love. Mom was saved by our Lord and Savior and baptized at the age of 23 years old. She was a God called singer and with the Spirit her singing would lift up the church. Mom loved the church, the Gospel, all the people, and she read her Bible every day. Mom was a faithful member of Stoney Ridge Missionary Baptist Church and then for the last 7 years a faithful Charter member of Hope Baptist Church, both of Marriottsville, Maryland. Mom was predeceased in death by her siblings: brothers Fred Smith of MD and Emitt Smith of TN, by sisters Virginia Tankersley, Una Faye Rogers, and Bertha Rogers, all of TN, also by her first husband of 35 years, Matt James Johnson, then by her second husband of 20 years, Harmie Hurd, both of MD, and by 4 grandchildren Kristy Johnson of MD, Rachel Lindsey of TN, Schavon Boyd of MD, and Rev. Samuel Johnson of TN. Mom is survived by her children and their spouses, daughter Loretta Johnson and her husband Elmer (Eddie) Johnson of Sykesville, MD, sons Rev. Loran Johnson and his wife Hope Johnson of Bulls Gap, TN, Lynn Johnson and his wife Joyce Johnson of Westminster, MD, daughter Lucille Johnson Green and her husband Rev. Ronald (Ron) Green of Sykesville, MD, step-daughter Rosa Riffey Gosnell and husband Robert Gosnell of Sykesville, MD, 15 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 28, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 12 noon at the funeral home. Officiating will be Rev. Ronald S. Green, Rev. Stephen L. Green and Rev. Loran T. Johnson. Interment will follow in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville. The pallbearers will be her grandsons and alternates will be her step-son-in-law and great-grandson. In lieu of flowers, you can make donations to help her family with any financial needs and traveling expenses in the name of her daughter, Loretta A. Johnson.
