Mr. Paul Scott Atwill

Paul Scott Atwill, 77, of Woodbine MD, passed away on May 11, 2024, from an accident at his residence. Paul was born on July 28, 1946, to Walter and Helen Atwill in Washington DC. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Carolyn "Carol" Hollar Atwill. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Michael Paul; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Heather Atwill; grandchildren, Ciera Ell and husband Anthony, Jared Reeves, Raven Reeves, Cody Reeves, Dylan Atwill and Caroline Atwill; and great-grandchildren, Kasyn, Haidyn, and Sloane Ell. Paul graduated from Sherwood High School in the summer of 1965. He joined the Army reserves as an Army Medical physical therapist. He worked in the burn unit at Walter Reid Army Medical center and Brook Army Hospital in Texas. During Paul’s 6-year tour in the Army Reserves, he met and fell in love with Carol and they married in 1966. Shortly after marriage, Paul and Carol had their first child, Tammy, in March 1970 and shortly after Brian, July 1972. In 1978 Paul and Carol purchased their first piece of property in Woodbine MD where they began building their dream home together. Paul began working as a pressman in 1968. He started working out of high school for McArdle Printing Company becoming a Lead Head Pressman, running a 6-Color Press. Paul immediately became active in the Union attending meetings and often demanding action from the then officers. In 1984, he ran and was elected for the office of Union President, a position he thrived at. Paul accomplished being one of the longest running Officers in the International Printing Union with over 40 years as President of Local 72-C and 56 years as an active member. Paul also served as a Volunteer Firefighter for the Lisbon Fire Department in Howard County for 20 years. Although Paul has had heart problems in the past several years, Paul was blessed in the ability to receive a LVAD Heart device last year in June that saved his life. Paul’s death was caused by an accidental fall doing what he really loved, building at his house. Paul shared that his greatest achievement over his tenure as Union President was starting one of the first multi-employer 401K funds in the early 1990’s. Paul affected the lives of so many people on and off the job. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 9:30 - 10:30 AM at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow at 10:30 AM.
