Nancy Lee Tucker Barnes

Nancy Lee Tucker Barnes, 91, of Sykesville, Maryland passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. Nancy was known for her generosity and unwavering commitment to family, faith, friendships, and community. She was born on June 3, 1933, to the late Dorsey Charles and Katherine Cross Tucker. Nancy was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Sewell J. "Buck" Barnes of Sykesville. She graduated from Sykesville High School in 1951, where she learned to drive in the first Driver's Education Class in Carroll County taught by Mabel Taylor Price. Upon graduation, Nancy went to work at Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville in the Dietary Department. Nancy continued her career at Springfield working in the Occupational Therapy & Industrial Therapy Departments. She retired in 1981 after working for 30 years. Nancy's life was filled with many cherished friendships! She greatly enjoyed getting together with friends and family, or chatting for hours on the phone with them. Nancy had many interests and hobbies that brought her joy. She was very talented and artistic. She began by designing and making drawings of dresses, which developed into Nancy painting beautiful pictures. She made lovely ceramics and flower arrangements, and she enjoyed giving family and friends monetary gifts made from dollar bills. She also collected depression glass, over 200 paperweights, decorative tin cans, and Santa Clauses. She was a life member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Sykesville, Maryland. Nancy belonged to a ladies' organization called Bonn-ette Club. She was also a Girl Scout Leader. Nancy enjoyed being the chairperson of her high school reunions for many years, and, also belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving is her sister, Sandra T. Freter of Willow Springs, Missouri. Nephews Kevin Freter of Willow Springs, Missouri; Michael Freter (Joy) & Family of Oklahoma; Chris Tucker (Chrissy) & Family of Mooreshead, NC; Eric Haugh of Manchester, MD, and Niece Patricia Tucker & Family of Hanover, PA. Nancy was predeceased by her nephew, Mark Freter, and most recently by her brother, Roger Allen Tucker, Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD 21784. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Funeral service will commence at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.
