Michael "Mike" Ray Running, age 57, of Marriottsville, passed away on October 23rd at Gilchrist Center in Baltimore, MD. Born August 19, 1968, in Duluth, MN, he was the son of the late Richard Adrian Running, Sr. and Charlotte Arrington (Ridgely) Running. Mike Running lived a life filled with purpose, laughter, and love. Music and entertainment were constant companions throughout his days. Whether he was traveling the open road or working late into the night, the sounds of classic rock from bands like Styx, Kansas, U2, Pink Floyd, and The Eagles filled the air. His deep appreciation for music reflected his vibrant personality and love of good company. Fridays were sacred-Movie Nights with his sons Sam and Mason-complete with wings, pizza, or another local culinary favorite as they shared laughter, stories, and favorite films both new and old. Mike was a man who truly loved food-especially when it came from people who poured their hearts into what they made. He delighted in pizza, thick full-bodied sandwiches, pasta, brisket, and anything rich in flavor, but what he cherished most were the people behind the meal. To Mike, food was an expression of love, culture, and connection. A traveler at heart, Mike found peace and joy on the open road. He loved the feeling of the wind in his hair and the miles stretching endlessly before him. His adventures took him and his sons to destinations like the Yellowstone, Redwood and Glacier National Parks where they spent weeks exploring and building memories that would last a lifetime. Mike’s fascination with classic muscle cars-especially Mopars-was more than a hobby; it was a lifelong passion. He could identify a Dodge, Plymouth, or Chrysler from a distance, recalling its make, model, factory color code, available options, and even its history with encyclopedic precision. From attending Mopar Nationals to working on and restoring Mopars, Mike’s love and knowledge of cars became a unique way to connect generations. Mike was a skilled marksman who approached shooting with the same precision and respect he brought to everything else in life. Throughout his life, he taught many-adults and youth-the essential tools of shooting and hunting, emphasizing safety. Whether handling pistols, rifles, or muzzleloaders, he took pride in understanding every detail of his firearms. Those who knew Mike also knew his sense of humor-quick, clever, and delivered with a mischievous smile. He had a gift for lightening any mood, often answering the phone with playful greetings like “Grand Central Station” or “state penitentiary.” And with that signature smile, he’d warn friends, “During the zombie apocalypse, don’t come limping up my driveway!” His laughter filled the spaces around him, leaving warmth wherever he went. Hard work was woven into Mike’s character. As a teenager, he began working on the Zepp farm and quickly developed a reputation for honesty and reliability. A farmer at heart, he never shied away from long days in the fields or the satisfaction of a job well done. Mike’s mechanical mind and problem-solving skills led him to establish his own Heating and Air Conditioning business over twenty years ago. Known for his meticulous standards and integrity, he became the person others called when no one else could fix a problem. He offered his customers honest work for fair prices, often shaking his head at the overcharging he saw elsewhere. His reputation for fairness, skill, and trustworthiness made him a respected professional in his field. A patient teacher, Mike freely shared his knowledge and experience with others. Many who worked alongside him-friends, employees and sons-benefited from his willingness to explain, guide, and mentor. His lessons were often rooted in timeless wisdom: that life’s complexities can be best met with simple, principled thinking. Mike defined his life through service. His commitment to helping others began early, including his two years of service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Arcadia Mission as a full-time missionary. Throughout his life, he faithfully served in many church callings, always striving to magnify his talents and reflect his devotion to Christ. A deep thinker, Mike approached decisions with care and reflection. He sought counsel from those he trusted and considered many perspectives before acting. This depth spanned all aspects of his life. His faith in God shaped not only his choices but the quiet strength and compassion that others saw in him daily. He was a covenant keeper-true to his promises to both God and man. Above all, Mike was a devoted father, brother, and son. When his mother, Charlotte, needed care, he welcomed her into his home, ensuring she was surrounded by love. His sons Mason and Sam were his greatest joy and source of pride. Whether working side by side or adventuring across the country, they shared an unbreakable bond. Mike taught them to be men of action and faith-lessons that will guide them throughout their lives. His legacy lives on in them and in all who were fortunate enough to know him. Mike was, in every sense, a friend to all. He rarely spoke ill of anyone and had a gift for connecting with people in genuine and heartfelt ways. His kindness was inclusive and his compassion unbounded-he reached out to those in need, lifting spirits and offering friendship freely. To many, Mike’s example of Christ-like love and sincerity will never fade. He was a good neighbor, a loyal friend, and a man whose light touched countless lives. Those who knew him best will remember Mike not just for what he did, but for who he was-a man of integrity, humor, wisdom, and love. His presence will be deeply missed, but the impact of his kindness and the legacy of his faith will continue to bless generations to come. Mike's survivors include his sons, Samuel Chase Running and Mason Joseph Running; siblings, Cyndi Thomson-Running and husband Mark, Richard Running and wife Kimberley, Daniel Running and wife Amy, and Tom Running and wife Tristin; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on November 6th from 6PM to 8PM at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville and on November 7th from 9:45AM to 10:45AM at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, 7225 Slacks Road, Sykesville, where a funeral service will follow at 11AM.
