Mrs. Mary Crisp Leatherwood

Mary Crisp Leatherwood, formerly of Sykesville, Maryland passed away peacefully at age 97 on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at Spring Arbor of Crofton. She was born on October 18,1926, in Crisp, North Carolina to the late William Spires Crisp and Emma Lewis Crisp. She was raised in North Carolina and, after high school, moved to Maryland to attend nursing school. She met her beloved husband of 60 years, the late Richard L. Leatherwood, while completing her schooling. She had a long and fulfilling career as a psychiatric nurse at Springfield Hospital Center. She was a compassionate, loving, generous, gracious, and courageous woman. Caring for and nurturing others came naturally to her. She was an avid and enthusiastic reader from childhood throughout her adult life–a love she fondly shared with her grandmother. She often recalled memories of when she would excitedly carry many tall stacks of books home from the library to share with her. A keen speller, she was known to enjoy participating in and reminiscing about spelling bee competitions. She passionately loved and enjoyed music, especially hymns and Irish ballads. Her faith was unwavering and she was a long-time member of Oakland Methodist Church. Her greatest joy was her family, and she was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Robyn and Larry Crum, Kay and Russell Bruner, Cris and Doreen Leatherwood, Lori and Glenn Pettinati; her sister Annie Leatherwood; her grandchildren: David, Alex and Ryan Crum; Kaitlin and Kyle Bruner; Aaron and Tyler Leatherwood; Emma and Abbi Pettinati; her 12 great grandchildren; and nieces: Rita Alexander and husband Marc, and Daria Keller and husband Michael. She was predeceased by her brothers Lyman Crisp, Thad Crisp, and Frank Crisp. Friends and family are welcome to attend a Visitation from 12- 1 p.m., on Friday, March 22, 2024 at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, with a Celebration of Life service following at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville.
