John S. Hawk Sr.

John S. Hawk Sr, 92, of Eldersburg, passed away on Friday, July 22 2022, at the Dove House in Westminster. Born on April 16, 1930 in Lisbon, MD, John was the son of the late Harry A. (Parker) Hawk and the late Minnie Hawk (nee Pickett). John proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and after his honorable discharge, came home and started his career at DCA (Donut Corp of America) in Ellicott City. He was a computer operator and programmer at that location until the flood of 1972 when the company moved to Jessup. He continued to work at this location until his retirement in 1992. John was an accomplished musician, playing in many bands throughout the years. He played with the Country Ramblers, The Country Stars and Gentle Times Band, just to name a few. He never met an instrument that he couldn't master. He could play mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, steel guitar, dobro, banjo and guitar. He was also a nature lover, and enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in his neighborhood. John was also an avid Baltimore Orioles fan. He rarely missed watching, or listening to, an Orioles game. He was excited about the recent upturn of the team. John married the love of his life, Doris Hawk (nee Carpenter) in 1954 and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage. They enjoyed camping, fishing, and getting together with their family and friends. In addition to his wife Doris, John is survived by his son John S. Hawk Jr. and his wife Diane. He is also survived by grandson Ryan Hoff and his wife Julie, and granddaughter Heather Couillard and her husband Brad. He also is survived by great-granddaughters, Hartley Hoff, Sophia Couillard and Lucy Couillard. In addition to his parents, John was also pre-deceased by brother, Harry A. Hawk Jr. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1pm on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD, with a service to follow at 1pm. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg. In lieu flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bridginglife's Dove House, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.
