James Thomas Scrivener

J. Thomas “Tom” Scrivener passed away on November 13, 2023. Born on February 24, 1938, in Catonsville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Maurice Tilden and Elizabeth Knotts Scrivener. Tom graduated from Catonsville High in 1957 and received his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland in,1961. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Seale Scrivener, earlier this year. They made their lives together in the greater Baltimore area, where Tom began his career with Charles R. Scrivener Construction Co., a family-owned business. In 1969, he founded Calvert General Contractors Corp., a commercial and industrial independent general contractor. From its modest beginning, his company became a significant participant in the growth of the greater Baltimore area and beyond, as evidenced by a portfolio of sixty-seven distinct projects, produced over a 20-year span. Notable among these projects, were the construction of Civic Plaza and the major expansion/renovations to City Hall. Additional civic clients included the University of Maryland, the state of Maryland, the city of Philadelphia, the Maryland State Aviation Administration, the Social Security Administration and the United States Postal Service. Private Commercial clients included General Motors Corporation, General Electric Corporation, IKEA Properties, and Six Flags Properties. While each of these projects and clients contributed to the stature and reputation of the company, Tom Scrivener took special pride in the restoration of the Baltimore City Hall Dome, the construction of the training facilities for the Baltimore Colts football team, and the construction of the central terminal, elevated roadway, and tunnel of BWI Airport. In 1989, Tom formed JTS Corp., in Ellicott City, Maryland to pursue large scale residential developments in Howard County and surrounding areas. Notable projects include Wellington, in Prince George’s County and Parkside, in Arundel County. Tom pursued these and other multiphase developments until his passing. Tom spent his early years enjoying his family’s farm with his brothers, Bob and Will, in Calvert County, Maryland. There began his love of the outdoors, where he developed a passion for goose hunting, fishing, and crabbing on the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. The family took up riding and foxhunting in the 70’s and Tom served as Master of Foxhounds with the Howard County - Iron Bridge Hounds from 1985-2001. Early in the 70’s, he began his adventures in Wyoming. He started elk hunting in Jackson Hole with the Eastman family and eventually bought his first ranch in Dubois. From there, he started hunting The Teton Wilderness with the Fleming family. This was the beginning of an over 30-year friendship, full of hunts, raising cattle, and enjoying the peace and beauty of fireside camps and majestic mountain views. Mary, Tom, and Guinness: their beloved dog, also came to know the beauty and pleasures of New England. They bought a home on the golf course, in Biddeford Pool, Maine. Realizing there may come a time when he could no longer tackle the Teton Mountains or chase foxhounds on horseback, he decided to take up golf. The unintended consequences of this new hobby were the friendships that formed and appreciation for this special place, for the entire family. Tom is survived by his daughters Lisa Eden and Cindy Dwelley, their husbands, Jim Treptow and John, five grandchildren: Carlyle, Mariah and her husband Daniel, Thomas, Nathan, Olivia, five great-grandchildren: Liam, Bruce, Heidi, Teddy, Scout, and his brother Bob and his family. He became known to most of us as “Papa” and he provided many opportunities and experiences throughout the years. Mary and Tom were active members of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Glenwood, MD and St. Martin’s in the Field, Biddeford Pool, ME A family burial was held on Monday, November 20th. Plans for a memorial service, for Mary and Tom, will be announced at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to one of their churches, or Gilchrist Hospice Center, Columbia, Maryland.
