Goswin Young Boner

Goswin Young Boner, born November 7, 1932, passed away on July 11, 2024, at home peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Goswin lived a long and fulfilling 91 years. He was born in Potsdam, Germany to General Alfred Hermann Hans Boner and Helga Rohn. Barely evacuating Potsdam before occupation by the Soviet regime he escaped with his mother and sister to Linz, Austria. At a young age after the war he came to the United States from Austria to visit his grandmother Martha Jung in Uniontown, Pa. Immigration was challenging during this time and he was deported back to Austria until he was of age to serve in the military and joined the USAF to gain an opportunity for permanent citizenship in the United States. He loved the United States and served in the United States Air Force for four years teaching Jet Engine Mechanics at Amarillo Air Force base in Amarillo, Texas. It was the first Air Force all-jet mechanic-training in the United States. He attended Uniontown Senior High School in Uniontown, Pennsylvania where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was given accommodation for overcoming the language handicap before he attended Carnegie Melon and California State College to earn a teaching and science degree with a Bachelor of Science in Education in May of 1961. He taught Chemistry at Randallstown and Woodlawn High Schools for over 30 years. During his teaching career he graduated many students who had an above average knowledge of Chemistry and the skills to fully understand complex scientific concepts. Many of these students after retirement continued to keep in touch with him and it brought him great pleasure to hear about their achievements and accomplishments. Many whom attributed their success to his teaching ability. He enjoyed Tennis and coached the Randallstown Tennis team for many seasons. During retirement he drove a school bus in the Sykesville Maryland area for Bollinger bus service. He enjoyed the daily smiles and greetings from the children on his bus routes. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 59 years, Christine Reichenbecker. They met while both were teachers at Woodlawn High School in Maryland and married in 1965. They had 3 sons and are survived by his son Christian Goswin Bonner and Abby Bonner from Greenbackville, Virginia along with his granddaughter, Sophia Grace Bonner from Charles Town, West Virginia. He is also survived by his son, Erich Bonner and Anya Bonner along with two granddaughters, Emily and Maria Bonner of Woodbine, Maryland. Youngest son, Daniel Alexander Boner of Eldersburg, Maryland. Younger brother Hanno Boner from Dangast Germany. His sister, Astrid Boner-Stoukos preceded him in death in June of 2023, in Munich, Germany along with a sister, Gerda Rohn Jahraus from Linz, Austria. Goswin enjoyed taking his summers off from teaching to spend time with his wife and family. He enjoyed gardening, coaching tennis and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He also loved German Chocolate Cake, Black Forest Cherry Cake and Apple Pie. He was a member of the German Society of Maryland and enjoyed anything German, food, festivals, music, cars, planes and restaurants. He also enjoyed traveling back to Germany and Austria with his family. He really enjoyed Classical Music and taking his wife out to dinner at their favorite restaurant The Schmankerl Stube in Hagerstown, Maryland. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg, MD 21784. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 10am at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5600 Old Washington Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.
