Mrs. Aileen Abigail Campbell McCausey

Aileen Abigail Campbell McCausey, age 98, passed away Monday, August 22, 2016 at Integrace Fairhaven in Sykesville. Aileen was born June 30, 1918 at Brahan Castle Gardens in Scotland, before immigrating first to Canada and then to Washington DC in 1947. Surviving are her three sons, Stewart, John, and Douglas; her daughter, Cherry; and many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While in the United Kingdom, Aileen served as a nurse during World War II. She was trained at the Perth Royal Infirmary and children’s hospital and was employed as a district nurse. Once in America, she began working at Georgetown University Hospital and then in 1963 she went back to school to receive her certification in the American College of Nurse Midwifery at the School of Hygiene at Johns Hopkins University. Aileen worked as a Nurse-Midwife and RN until 1985. She then went on to write five books and create beautiful artwork while residing in Woodstock, VA. In 2009 Aileen moved to Fairhaven in Sykesville so she was closer to her family. Through not only her service as a nurse, but also her books and artwork, Aileen was able to bring her native Scottish culture, incredible compassion, loving care, and true wisdom to each and every person she encountered. Aileen was the kind of individual that you could never forget, whether you only met her once or you were lucky enough to spend time with her every day. She was never too busy to talk about anything and everything, sometimes even breaking out into song midway through a conversation. She made you feel important and cared about, showing genuine interest in everything you do and say. Aileen will be greatly missed by all. But one can remember what seems to have been her life motto, “Life’s a journey.” Even when life threw her countless obstacles and challenges, Aileen always persevered and never gave up - she was a true inspiration. She would not want us to be stuck in sadness or paralyzed from anger and frustration. Instead, Aileen would want us to pick ourselves up, just as she did many times, and keep pushing through with a laugh and a smile. We can find happiness in the knowledge that she is now looking down on all of us and watching with a smile as we go through our lives, making her so proud. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 7538 Main St., Sykesville, MD 21784. Inurnment in Springfield Cemetery, Sykesville. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Paul's United Methodist Church,(earmark for Mission Committee), 7538 Main St., Sykesville, MD 21784.
