Mrs. Agnes Anthony Stem

Agnes Anthony Stem, age 93, of Westminster, formerly of Timonium, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017, at Carroll Hospice Dove House. Born July 8, 1923, in Romancoke, (Kent Island), MD she was the daughter of the late Lloyd B. and Gladys A. Andrew. Mrs. Stem was the second daughter and had 9 brothers in her farming family. She was the last remaining sibling. Mrs. Stem was truly a "Renaissance Woman" who led an interesting life. Having married at a very young age and having a daughter, she left the Eastern Shore in 1940 to come to Baltimore to work, staying with an aunt and uncle in West Baltimore. Another uncle was the legendary Capt. Alexander Emerson, Baltimore City's first Cpt. of the Vice Squad. She worked at numerous jobs during and after the war years, due to a shortage of men at war, Some were as an ESSO Gas station attendant, as on e of the first class of 15 women to drive a Baltimore City street car and lastly, one of the iconic "Rosy the Riveter" at Glenn L. Martin in Middle River helping to build B26's and B29's as well as other military aircraft. In 1943 she married John J. "Jack" Anthony from Frostburg, MD and had three children to go with her beautiful daughter, Faith. In 1950, she and her family moved to Gaither, MD and both she and her husband Jack became LPNs and worked at the Springfield Hospital Center. Things were fine for a few years but in 1955 her husband Jack died of cancer leaving her a 32 year old widow with 4 children. In 1957, she mover her family to West Baltimore and then to Timonium in 1958. She was to live in Timonium for the next 40+ years. Much of this time was spent working at Johns Hopkins Hospital for 20 years and a t homes and other hospitals for another 20 years. In 1967, she married William F. Stem of Eldersburg. Very sadly, Bill Stem lived less than a year. In 2004, due to her poor health, she sold her home in Timonium and moved into a duplex home owned by her daughter Adrienne in Westminster, where she would live out her life. Mrs. Stem left a legacy of love, hard work and determination, especially to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Jack Anthony, and wife Regina of Frederick, Adrienne Smith of Westminster and Timothy Anthony of Owings Mills and his good friend, Cathy Johnson. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Jon Larmore, Ronnie Shackelford, Jeff Larmore, Melissa Nowak, Denise Devault, Dawn Poholsky, Jennifer Bonner, John Anthony and Brittany Anthony; also 8 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by an infant son and her daughter, Faith C. Larmore in 2010. She was also predeceased by her sister, Katherine Marth and all of her Andrew brothers, all on the Eastern Shore, Lloyd, Donlin, Phillip, Harold, Lee Benedict "Benny", Palmer and 2 infant brothers. Phillip, Benny and Palmer served in WWII with Benny perishing in a B17 on December 24, 1944 over Germany. The American Legion Post #296 in Queenstown is named for Benny. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 6, 2017 from 10 am to 12 noon at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A funeral liturgy will follow at St. John's Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster at 1pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Cancer Society or to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (ASPCA).
