Mr. Roman C. "Bud" Meckel Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

On Monday, July 25, 2022, Roman C. “Bud” Meckel, of Sykesville, died at BridgingLife Dove House in Westminster. He was 84 years old. Born on November 13, 1937, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Edward G. and Arlein E. Meckel. He was the husband of the late Ellen V. Meckel, his wife of 51 years, and the late Eleanor R. “Nora” Niemeyer Meckel, his wife of 8 years. “Bud” enlisted in the Maryland Air National Guard when he was in high school. This required that he get a signature and permission from his parents, which they granted. He went on to serve 42 years in the MDANG achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was affectionately known as Chief by "his guys" at the armament shop. During his career he had the pleasure of working on a variety of aircraft which he loved to talk about They included F-86, A-37, A-10 (his favorite). Dad was heavily involved in establishing the MDANG Retirees’ Association. That group continues to this day and is an important communication tool for present and formal members of the "guard" All will remember him for his dry sense of humor He was funny in a mischievous sort of way and was famous for the little grin he would get when he made someone laugh or knew he said something funny. Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Edward G. and Peggy A. Meckel, of Finksburg; grandsons, Derek P. Meckel and Patrick E. Meckel; and sisters, Iris M. Perricone, of Westminster, and Karen F. Meckel, of Cheyenne, WY. In addition to his wives, Ellen and Nora, he was predeceased in death by his son, Roman C. “Chuck” Meckel II, and by his brother, Philip L. Meckel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Monday, August 1, 2022, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A funeral liturgy will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Community, 915 Liberty Road, Eldersburg followed by interment with military honors at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
