Mr. Michael Charles Zambito Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Michael (Mike) Charles Zambito (US Army Sergeant First Class, Retired), 51, of Bowie, Maryland went to be with our Lord on May 11, 2022 at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Mike was born May 18, 1970 in Batavia, NY to John and Beverly (Schall) Zambito of Eldersburg, Carroll County, Maryland. He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Francis and Josephine (Augello) Zambito; maternal grandparents Charles and Anna (Billiski) Schall, cousin Robert “Lynx” Reardon; Aunt Barbara Zambito; and beloved dog, Murphy. He is survived by the love of his life, Tami (Baimbridge) Zambito; parents, John and Beverly Zambito; brother and sister-in-law, Jim Zambito and Alisa Corrales and their sons Josh and Mike’s Godson Alex; sister, Liz Zambito and fiancé Robert O’Brien; Godmother Aunt Kay Zagorski and Godfather Uncle Frank Zambito; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, his Goddaughter Audra Archambo, military family; and countless friends. Mike graduated from South Carroll High School in Winfield, MD in 1988. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in 1999. Immediately after graduating high school, Mike enlisted in the US Army and served as an All Source Intelligence Analyst from 1988 to 1995. His unit assignments included, but were not limited to, the 66th Military Intelligence Group and 202nd Military Intelligence BN, 513 MI BDE. He also served in Southwest Asia in 1993-1994. After serving his initial military service obligation, he transitioned into the United States Army Reserve serving majority of that time in the 323rd Military Intelligence BN (MIRC) and attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC)/E-7. SFC Zambito was deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004; 2009-2010) and once in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2013-2014). His many military awards and achievements included the Bronze Star Medal (2013-2014), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2009-2010), Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Medal (6th Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device and bronze Hourglass device, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (2nd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-Wheeled Vehicle(s) Clasp, US Centcom Combat Service Identification Badge, Meritorious Unit Award with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was respected and admired by his Soldiers, peers, and other leaders as a tactical and technical expert and Soldier leader. He retired after 28 years of honorable service in November, 2016. Mike’s civilian employment included working as a Cartographer for MapQuest (1999-2000), Analyst for Concurrent Technologies Corp in Johnstown, Cambria County, PA (2001-2006), then returned to Maryland in 2006 where he worked as an analyst for various federal defense contracting companies until January 2022. In February 2022, he started training at Lincoln Technical Institute to become a HVAC technician. Mike will be remembered for his devotion to God, his family, his country, his friends, military Veterans, and his beloved Baltimore Ravens, Orioles, and Washington Capitals. Mike’s immediate family will receive family and friends from 2:00PM - 5:00PM on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD 21784. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 11:00AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Community, 915 Liberty Rd, Eldersburg, MD 21784. A Celebration of Life with military honors will be held at American Legion Post 60, 2 Main St, Laurel, MD 20707 on Sunday, May 29, 2022 at 3:00PM. Mike’s family is asking those in attendance to wear red, white, and blue to honor Mike when attending any of these events. Additionally, it was Mike’s wish to be cremated and laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with those who have served honorably and gone before. The inurnment at Arlington will occur in the future based on Arlington’s current waitlist.
