B.G. Harold L. Ramsburg, Sr.

B.G. Harold L. Ramsburg Brigadier General Harold L. Ramsburg, Sr. (Maryland US Army Retired) died June 28, 2016 at the Brightview Assisted Living Home located at Westminster Ridge in Westminster. He was 92 years old. He was born January 14, 1924 on a farm in Frederick County, the youngest of ten children. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 during WWII. He was deployed to Europe where his unit fought in the Battle of the Bulge as well as other engagements. He was there for eighteen months. Prior to shipping out he married Jessie L. Day of West Friendship in 1944. When General Ramsburg returned from the war, he and his wife built on to Jessie's family home in West Friendship. On the farm he and Jessie raised cattle, horses and pigs. He also started his own Appliance Sales and Service Business. After selling his business, he obtained his real estate license. He was a multi-millionaire agent with Long and Foster Realtors in Ellicott City for over 35 years, retiring at the age of 85. After the war he joined the 121st Engineers/29th Division of the National Guard headquartered in Ellicott City. He rose through the ranks from Staff Sergeant to Brigadier General. He was then promoted to Commander in the Maryland National Guard and stationed at the Pikesville Armory. He was most proud of the work done by the Guard during Hurricane Agnes. The Guard was utilized building Bailey bridges in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. General Ramsburg was an active member of the Glenelg United Methodist Church, serving in such capacities as leader of the MYF, head of fundraising, and as a church Lay Leader. He also enjoyed being a member of the church's sports teams. He played basketball till he broke his wrist at the age of 40 and softball until he was 50. General Ramsburg was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Jessie L. Ramsburg, by his daughter Dorothy Jo Robinson and a grandchild, Alexander Feldman. He was also predeceased by his nine siblings. General Ramsburg is survived by his wife of eight years, Nina Ramsburg, by two daughters and two sons-in-law Kathleen A. and Gregory Faries of Sykesville, and Sharon R. and Thomas Smith of West Friendship, and a son Harold L. Ramsburg, Jr. of Columbia. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher Faries and wife Melanie of Ellicott City, Shaun Faries of Baltimore, Lindsay Smith of West Friendship, Tyler Ramsburg and Amanda Ramsburg of Ellicott City, and three great grandchildren, Joseph Granic of Myrtle Beach, SC, Cassandra Granic of Philadelphia, PA, and Connor Patrick Faries of Ellicott City. A visitation will be held at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville on Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Glenelg United Methodist Church, 13900 Burntwoods Rd., Glenelg, on Monday, July 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Mount View Cemetery in Marriottsville.
