Mr. William Scott Jones

William (Bill) Scott Jones, 90 of Sykesville, MD, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 25, 2023, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, surrounded by loved ones. Born October 7, 1932, in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of the late Marion Christine Scott. He was predeceased by his first wife Theresa Rene Shocker and his second wife Linda Joy Pierce. Bill is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Kristin Jones and Andrew and Melissa Jones, his cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Christine, Zachary and Silas Jones, and his beloved brother, Robert Jones, of Belleville, IL, and his nieces and nephew. Bill joined the Air Force during the Korean War and was a Gunnery Trainer on B 29’s, B 36’s and B 45’s. After he was discharged, he utilized the GI Bill to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Washington University in St, Louis, IL in 1959, and was 2nd in his class. He then received the Westinghouse Fellowship to earn a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1961. Then in 1967 he earned an MBA from George Washington University. Bill was hired by Westinghouse and he and his bride moved to Baltimore, MD in 1960 to start their life together. He was instrumental in creating the AWACS system, which is still in use today. Bill and his colleagues held several patents. In addition to his technical skills, Bill was an excellent speaker, and had a gift at making presentations of complex subjects that was both credible and understandable. Although an Engineer by trade, he was quite effective with marketing. He was known as the Silver-tongued Orator, and his impact on winning numerous programs at Westinghouse is still being felt today. Bill traveled the world and met interesting people during his career, such as Shirley Temple Black, and at the time VP George H. W. Bush. Ironically, Bill would say if he knew that he was going to work on radars at Westinghouse he probably wouldn’t have accepted the job. After he retired from Westinghouse, he took a job at the US DOT, where he worked on IntelliDriveSM, which is a suite of technologies and applications using wireless communications to provide connectivity among all types of vehicles, between vehicles and roadway infrastructure, and among vehicles, infrastructure and wireless consumer devices to improve safety mobility, and environment. This is used by EZ Pass. Bill was a well-rounded person who could talk to anyone and make them feel appreciated. He loved his family, photography, golf, Scuba diving, motorcycles, his Jag, and playing Bridge and Canasta. He was a boating enthusiast, and was an avid woodworker, always looking for the next project to work on. He also would arrange flowers at the holidays and had a true appreciation of flowers and plants. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.
