Walter Rudolph Merten June 13, 1929 – March 7, 2025 With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Walter Rudolph Merten, who left this world on March 7, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 13, 1929, Walter lived a life defined by love, loyalty, and quiet strength. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran in the Korean War, carrying those values of duty and honor throughout his life. He pursued his education at both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan, and his love of learning never faded—he was always eager to expand his knowledge and explore new ideas. Walter was married to his beloved wife, Carol, for 66 years, sharing a lifetime of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising their three children, Lynn, Beverly, and Paul. He was a proud grandfather to Kristin, Eric, John, and Clara, and he cherished his role as a great-grandfather to Savannah and Evelyn. A true outdoorsman at heart, Walter found joy in the beauty of West Virginia, where he felt most at peace. He also had a deep love for dogs, and throughout his life, his loyal companions brought him endless happiness. His last dog, Bonnie, held a special place in his heart, providing him with constant love and companionship. Walter had a sharp wit, a kind heart, and a steadfast moral compass that guided everyone who knew him. He could make you laugh with just a few words and leave you thinking with his wisdom. He loved deeply and unconditionally, and his presence was a source of comfort and strength. He was also incredibly generous, always willing to give to those less fortunate, never hesitating to lend a helping hand to those in need. His legacy is not just in the stories he told or the memories he left behind, but in the love and kindness he instilled in his family and friends. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will forever remain in the laughter of his grandchildren, the rustling of the trees he so loved, and the values he passed down to those who were lucky enough to know him. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an animal shelter of your choice—an act of kindness that honors Walter’s love for animals. Walter was a man who gave so much and asked for so little. He will be missed beyond words, but his love will carry on in our hearts forever.
