Sarah Mellon

On Wednesday, June 12, beloved Sarah Mellon passed away. She had celebrated her 80th birthday in December. Born to Billy and Margaret Ervin in Jacksonville, Florida, Sarah was an incredible force of kindness, love, generosity, and laughter for her family, her friends, and anyone who was fortunate enough to strike up a conversation with her in the grocery store checkout line. Sarah was an incredible cook and loved food. Cementing family dinner as a necessary tradition and value for all future and current family, Sarah was innovative and experimental in the kitchen, learning new cuisines and then perfectly re-creating traditional dishes from far-off places. She was renowned for her Lebanese cuisine, as well as her Bouche Noel which would always appear at Christmas time after much swearing and sweating in the kitchen. Later in her life as she battled cancer, she befriended all of her nurses by asking them their favorite regional dishes. Beyond cooking, Sarah loved to travel, taking first her son, Salim and then her daughter, Amelia, and then friends to local and international destinations. She loved making new memories and trying new cuisines, and then coming home and regaling friends and family with hilarious stories about cultural mishaps, new cuisines, and weird museums she visited. Mommy Sarah (as she was called by her grandchildren) was an incredible mother and grandmother. Her granddaughters from New Mexico, Kalila and Mahalia, have incredibly fond memories of visiting her, eating giant (and definitely parentally forbidden) bags of gummy candy, going to the pool, going shopping at thrift stores, and parading around giving each other fashion shows. Her grandchildren Ava and Amani were a huge part of her life. Mommy Sarah could be seen making cookies with Ava, sitting beside Amani on the couch joking and laughing as he played video games, and encouraging all kinds of dancing, performing, joking, and laughing. We all remember Mommy Sarah as someone who was kind and sensitive during our darkest moments and funny and joyous at our lightest. Services will be held Saturday, June 22nd at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, Maryland with a visitation between 2-4pm followed by as service at 4pm at the funeral home. Sarah loved nothing more than to eat, drink, and be merry with those around her. She loved a well-made cocktail so please raise a glass to an extraordinary woman. She is survived by her son, Salim and wife Christele, her daughter, Amelia and husband Cecil, and her grandchildren, Kalila, Mahalia, Ava, Amani, Finn, and Rico.
