Sarah Ruth Hering Day

Small with a Mighty Big Impact Sarah Ruth Hering, a petite lady descended from the founding families of Maryland and the Carolinas, was born in 1931 and grew up in Sykesville, MD at the historic Hering owned Springfield Roller Mills. While attending a Girl Scout/Boy Scout mixer as a young girl she drew the attention of a young boy named Maurice Hanford Day (aka Gus) whose love for her never wavered for the next 80+ years as they built a beautiful life together. A caregiver by nature, Sarah was a devoted daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother. During the 1950s when less than 5% of all women went to college, she attended Western Maryland College and received a nursing degree from Johns Hopkins in 1953 where she served as class president. Shortly after graduating, Sarah and Gus married and began an adventure that lasted the next 71 years. Always a Marylander at heart, she returned to Sykesville to start a family after spending a couple years in Missouri while Gus completed a stint in the Air Force. She spent the next 30 years as a dedicated nurse while raising an active family. After retiring, she volunteered at Holy Cross Hospital, with Meals on Wheels, and the Olney Theater. She also joined the PEO Sisterhood. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, her golden retrievers, and the outdoors. But her proudest achievement was the family she built with Gus - a daughter Sharon, a son Dan, and grandsons Evan and Grant. She endured their endless ribbing and practical jokes with patience and good humor, all the while providing a foundation that belied her stature. They will miss her terribly, especially her laugh, her smile, and her wonderful cooking. A memorial service in honor of Sarah will be held Saturday, March 9, 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the John Street Quarters (Firehouse) in Westminster, MD.
