Dr. Robert T. Scott

Robert Twining Scott Born February 5, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland, to Elizabeth (Twining) and James R. Scott, died June 30, 2017 at University of Maryland Shock Trauma. He was pre-deceased by brother, James R. Scott, Jr. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Carolyn (Seaman) Scott, son, David Scott and wife Anne of Rockville, Daughter, Suzanne Altpeter and husband Lee of Winter Garden, Florida, step-daughter, Allison Gladden and husband Greg of Taneytown and step-son, Andrew Ingalls and fiance, Kelly of Westminster. Also sister, Sarah Totten and husband, Dennis, of Uniontown, MD and grandchildren Dalton, Shannon, Ryan, Gillian, Abigail, Zachary, Nicholas, and Luke, as well as numerous nephews and nieces, and grandnephews and nieces. Robert grew up in Baltimore County where he was active in 4-H, receiving many awards and remained an active supporter of that his whole life. He graduated from Milford Mill High School in 1962 and then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from then Western Maryland College (now McDaniel). In 1969 he graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of MD School of Dentistry, earning many other awards. From 1969-1971 he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. Then in 1973 he earned a Master of Science in Orthodontics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. In 1973 he opened his private practice specializing in orthodontics in Westminster. By the time of his retirement in 2014, he had six offices around the county and three partners. Dr. Scott became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1985, and continued to influence the efficiency and professionalism of Orthodontics through his service in all of the chairs of the State and Middle Atlantic Societies of Orthodontists. From 2000 and even after his retirement he continued to influence the future through his teaching and guidance of young orthodontists in the Orthodontic program at the University of MD School of Dentistry. As much as Dr. Scott loved making people smile, his contributions didn’t end in the office. He helped establish the first Montessori School in Westminster and served as president of the Westminster Rotary Club. He served Westminster United Methodist Church on the Staff Parish Relations Committee, the Building Committee and the Finance Committee. Dr. Scott traveled with the Commission on Missions Dental Team to Costa Rica. Further dental missions were with the Equadent Foundation to Ecuador and with Operation Smile to Morocco and Kenya. For all of this he was inducted into the International College of Dentists. He spent more than 20 years as a director of Union National Bank and then Mercantile Bank. All this work did not go unnoticed by his community. He received the Distinguished Service Award by the Westminster Jaycees in 1977. In 1993 he was made a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. Scott’s alma mater gave him the Alumni Community Service Award in 2006. 2007 brought the Philanthropist of the Year Award presented by the Community Foundation of Carroll County. Once again, in 2012, his Rotary club recognized him with the Citizen of the Year award. For the past seven years Bob Scott has been the chairman of the Industrial Development Authority of Carroll County, working to make his beloved county better. He even found time to grow some grapes and make a very good wine. He loved fishing and scuba diving where he took some wonderful underwater pictures. More than anything he loved his family and friends and all the patients he had helped over his 40 years making the world a better, brighter place. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 am at the Big Baker Chapel at McDaniel College, Westminster. Interment will be private.
