Mr. Norman Ralph Pickett Sr.

Norman Ralph Pickett, Sr., age 99 of Westminster, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at The Woods of Sun Valley. Born June 14, 1918 on a farm between Franklinville and Hooper Road, near Sam's Creek, Md. He was the son of the late Lloyd and Dorothy Bauman Pickett. He was the husband of the late Julia Ann Carr Pickett, his wife of 74 years. He attended Hoopers Delight Elementary School and graduated in 1932. He moved to Sykesville and attended Sykesville High School and graduated in 1936. He attended a special course in Radio, Television and Electronic Services. He married Julia Ann Carr, daughter of the late George and Amelia Brown Carr of Conowing, Md in 1940. Drafted into the Armed Services in August of 1943, he served 27 months in the United States Air Force. He attended basic training in Miami Beach and gunnery school in Harlingen, TX. He then attended instructor's training in Fort Myers, FL, then back to teaching on the firing range in Harlingen AFV with moving targets. Selected as Flight Medical Technician with Air Transportation Command, escorting combat wounded soldiers back to the States for treatment. He was discharged from the service in December of 1945. He loved to travel by car, visiting all 50 states including traveling by plane to Hawaii and Alaska. He worked at Springfield Hospital taking nursing training and graduated in 1939 as an LPN. He worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground for 30 years and retired in 1973. He worked for a funeral home in Aberdeen, Md for 20 years and retired in 1993, then moved to Westminster, Md. Surviving are son Norman Pickett, Jr. and his wife Marilou, of Westminster, daughter Bonnie Cheryl Cawthorne and her husband John of North Carolina, and grandchildren Daniel Pickett, Jennifer Pickett, and Ian Alexander, and many nieces and nephews. Norman was predeceased by his four brothers, Raymond, Carl, Richard and Robert and by his 5 sisters Margaret, Beryl, Alice, Mary (died at 4 years old with pneumonia) and another sister who died as a baby. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 11:00 am at Taylorsville United Methodist Church, 4356 Ridge Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771 with Rev. Sherri Comer Cox officiating. Inurnment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a memorial donation to the church at the address above.
