Mrs. Norma Miller Brown

Norma Miller Brown, age 77, of Westminster, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Carroll Hospice Dove House, Westminster. Born in Glenville, PA and later lived in Hanover, PA she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Ethel Miller. She was the beloved wife of C. Todd Brown, her husband of over 53 years whom she married on July 13, 1962. She was a 1957 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Hanover, PA. She was a summa cum laude graduate of Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA and a masters equivalent from Loyola College, Baltimore, MD. Norma was a member of the Maryland Retired School Personnel Association. A member of Carroll Hospital Auxiliary, serving for many years on the Hospital's Gala Committee. Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Sykesville where she was a dedicated choir member and served on various committees. She sang with many organizations including The Hanover Community Singers. She was an avid supporter of The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Many former students walked with her through the years in relays. Norma's mother always said, she had to be a teacher. It's just all she wanted to do. She enjoyed teaching throughout her 40 year career. Mrs. Brown always believed in the best of each of her students and she demanded the best from her young students. She loved seeing former students as adults. She felt she lived a richer life because of them, since she brought music to the lives and hearts of so many, especially the thousands of students whose lives she touched. Mrs. Brown was always very proud when parents would thank her for building confidence and self-esteem in their children. She started her vocal career in Baltimore County schools. She was one of several teachers who introduced the Kodaly Music Reading Program in Baltimore County. She also taught English and History in the American Dependant School in Germany, while her husband was stationed there in the U.S. Army. Mrs. Brown returned to Baltimore County and several years later, joined the Carroll County School System. She was named a Carroll County Outstanding Teacher in 1997 and was nominated on two other occasions as an outstanding teacher. She was a talented musician, dedicated teacher and active volunteer. Norma was a member of the Free State Corvette Club. She was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Sykesville South Carroll Rotary Club for contributions to humanity. Surviving in addition to her husband are son and daughter-in-law Scott and Karen Brown, grandchildren Alexandra and Todd Brown all of Westminster; brother and sister-in-law Dale and Janice Miller of Dallastown, PA; sister-in-law Anita Brown of Westminster, two nephews, three nieces and numerous great nieces and great nephews. She was a devoted and proud grandmother and enjoyed being involved in her grandchildren's activities. Friends may call on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 11am from St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 7538 Main Street, Sykesville, MD with Pastors Terri Rae Chattin, Doug Tzan and Jimmie Schwartz officiating. Interment will follow at Springfield Cemetery, Sykesville, MD.
