Mrs. Mary Ernestine Crow McGee

Mary Ernestine Crow McGee Mary Ernestine Crow McGee, died at age 96 on February 19, 2015 at Fairhaven in Sykesville. Ernestine was born on June 10, 1918 to Etta May Hogg and Ernest DeWitt Crow. She attended elementary school in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and graduated from Central College, Conway, Arkansas with a degree in journalism and John Brown University in Siloam Springs. After completing her education, Ernestine worked in Human Resources for Carter Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma; then as a reporter for the Harold and Democrat Newspaper in Siloam Springs. She married Morris Wayne McGee in Joseph's Chapel, Mission Inn, Riverside, California following her groom's return from service in WWII. Her early career as a journalist allowed Ernestine to document her life as a military wife in journals and photographs as the family lived and traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Ernestine was a lifelong member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, initiated into Chapter T, Siloam Springs in 1940, transferring membership to several chapters in many states as her husband's Air Force career moved them frequently. At the time of her death, she was an active member of Chapter AJ, Maryland. She was a lifelong committed Christian. Ernestine was president of the Protestant Women of the Chapel in Incerlik, Turkey and in Vaihingen, Germany. She was active in St. Andrew's Methodist Church and the Walk to Emmaus Community in San Antonio for over 20 years. During her husband's final months in the Veteran's Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. Ernestine received commendation from the Veteran's Administration for her leadership in initiating and completion of a chapel for the Medical Center. After the death of her husband in 1988, she continued living in San Antonio until 2003 when she moved to Maryland to reside in Fairhaven Coninuing Care Community near her oldest daughter. Ernestine was a loving and generous woman who loved to read, cook, participate in church activities, and explore new places. Her ability to see something good in all people, and respond with compassion and an unfailing sense of humor, made her an inspiration to all who knew her. Ernestine was predeceased by her parents, and brothers William Seldon Crow and Harry DeWitt Crow, and nephew James Ernest Crow. Ernestine is survived by her daughters Patricia McGee (Austin, TX) and Sharon Ghassami and her husband Moe Ghassami (Ellicott City, MD), nieces Cathie Ann Crow Swoboda and Pamela Lynn Crow Sparks and her nephew Terry DeWitt Crow (California), and grand nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 8pm at St. Stephens Reformed Episcopal Church, 2275 Liberty Rd., Eldersburg.
