MARTHA RUTH STEPHENS 03/27/1936 - 08/31/2025 Mom was our "ANGEL"!! That best describes this compassionate, loving Christian lady who was always there with a listening ear, kind words, and comfort for all of us. She was born Martha Ruth Smith on March 27, 1936, in Grundy, Virginia. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walker & Blanche Smith, and her brother, Harold Smith. Her earthly stay of 89 years was beset with being bed bound for almost the last 10 years of her life. Mom was one of those special people for whom we have no doubt that GOD prepared a glorious home for her in Heaven, and she is with him now. Our Mom became Martha R. Stephens on July 10, 1954, when she married our Dad, William (Bill) Elbert Stephens. They recently celebrated their 71st Anniversary. Leaving behind to mourn her loss are her loving husband Elder Bill Stephens, one son: Wiley Stanley and wife Tina; three daughters: Teresa Knight, Wanda Santiago and husband Sandy and Sheila Jackson and husband Steve; 10 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Also included are a host of extended family and Christian friends. Mom was baptized a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in August, 1971. She served as Clerk of Old Carroll Primitive Baptist Church for 27 years and was a humble and faithful servant alongside her Pastor husband. As a Pastor's wife, she opened her home to the feeding and fellowship of GOD's children. Always supportive of her husband's duty to serve as a Pastor and the Blessings that they both received for having done so. She was a precious sister who worshipped the LORD joyfully and gave aid whenever needed. She retired from Westinghouse Aeronautics Division where she was part of a team that made modules for the NASA Hubble Telescope. Although her mental capacity deteriorated with the onset of Alzheimer's, she never forgot the beautiful hymns of church services. What a saddened time it was when she could no longer give us her smile. Although non-verbal most of the time, her smiles always brightened our days. What a BLESSING to see them. Our hope is that someday our family will be together again eternally. Where there'll be no pain and sorrow. Only contentment, happiness and everlasting JOY. Unimaginable LOVE for all. Psalm 116:15 states that: "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." What a day that will be!!! The family will receive friends from 10 to 11AM on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow at 11AM.
