Margaret "Peggy" Wade

Margaret "Peggy" May (Nagel) Wade of Eldersburg, MD, passed away at age 99 on June 27, 2024. Peggy is survived by her son John Wade, Jr., daughter-in-law Lois Wade, daughter Carol Custer, grandchildren Holly Rogers (Steven Rogers) and Mark Custer (Amanda Custer), great-granddaughters Bethany Rogers and Alexandra Custer, and many nieces and nephews. Peggy was predeceased by her husband John Wade, Sr., her parents William Nagel and Eva May Lowe, stepfather Johnny Walker, siblings Charles Nagel, William "Ding" Nagel (Betty Nagel), Earl Nagel (Ruby Nagel), James Nagel, Shirley Pendleton, Barbara Anderson, and George Walker, and son-in-law Gregory Custer. Peggy was born July 19, 1924 in Baltimore, MD. Her life changed at the age of 10 following the early death of her father, as she withdrew from school to care for her siblings. Peggy met her husband John Wade as a teenager and they were married in 1941. Their first child John Jr. was born a year later. The young family lived in Catonsville, MD and then Georgia while John Sr. served in the army before returning to Catonsville, where daughter Carol was born in 1946, then settling in Finksburg. John and Peggy were married for over 50 years. In addition to supporting her husband and raising her children, Peggy worked as a cashier at the A&P grocery store. She was a talented seamstress, making dresses for Carol and her baby dolls, and later teaching Carol to sew as well. Peggy was a wonderful cook and holiday dinners at her house were a highlight. She also made delicious chocolate candy. John and Peggy made elaborate clothespin dolls with themed outfits, which they sold at craft shows. Peggy's other interests included bus trips, her Pomerian Muffett and collecting Swarovski crystal figures. Peggy was a doting grandmom. Mark and Holly each spent a week at her house each summer, where they played cards, went shopping, and did arts and crafts projects. Later in life, Peggy enjoyed time with her great-granddaughters. Following John Sr.'s death, Peggy initially stayed in their home before moving to a senior living condominium in Eldersburg. She maintained her active and independent lifestyle into her 90s. Peggy was very close with her neighbors and enjoyed a daily afternoon gathering. She volunteered at the Carroll County Hospital gift shop for over 20 years. She was active in her church (Mt. Zion United Methodist) as well as the Red Hat Society Peggy will be sorely missed by all who knew her. The funeral service to celebrate Peggy's life will be held on Wednesday, July 3, at 12:00 p.m. at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD 21784. There will be a time of visitation starting at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Crestlawn Memorial Park, 2150 Mount View Rd, Marriottsville, MD 21104. In lieu of flowers, a gift in Peggy's memory may be sent to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church or the Carroll County Hospital volunteer program.
