Obituary Kelly L. Mills-Khan Beloved daughter, mother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and very best friend, Kelly Mills-Khan was called home lovingly surrounded by her family on Monday, October 28, 2024. Kelly was born in Keyser, West Virginia on May 16, 1967, the oldest of two children, to proud parents Betty (Mom Mom) and Roy “Buzz” (Pap) Mills. Kelly grew up in West Virginia and pursued her higher education at West Virginia University. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Phlebotomy, and a Master’s degree in Industrial Safety. Kelly applied her expertise at the National Institute of Health, Johns Hopkins, and Polstar Labs. She was an extremely intellectual person, always seeking to educate herself about her interests and applying them to her life. But her biggest life achievement was becoming a mother to her angels, Sami, and Alex. Kelly met Jamaal Khan in graduate school, and they were married. They became proud parents to Sami in April 2001, and Alex in September 2002. Kelly made her children her priority above all else, leaving traditional jobs behind to raise her boys. They were and will always be her pride and joy. She held an endless and boundless love for her boys. Mom Mom says, “She was the sweetest mother and my special sweetheart.” Kelly home-schooled Sami and Alex through middle school, ensuring they were not only educated to the highest level but well-rounded in life lessons. She committed to teaching them how to be hard-working, respectful young men. She also became a living example of her faith and forgiveness, renewing her commitment to God and telling her family the story of when she was baptized in Cheat Lake, WV, as a young woman. Kelly was determined to support her boys’ sporting aspirations, signing them up for training, coaching, football, and most of all baseball. She became a team mom for different teams and adopted the coaches, families, and even her son’s teammates as her own family. Pap said it best, “she was kind, loving, giving, and considerate.” Sami and Alex have made her the proudest mom and gave her strength and will to live. She deposited all her life lessons in both her sons who will forever remember her for her “mental toughness” said Sami, and “good sense of humor” who according to Alex, always laughed at him being a jokester. Kelly leaves behind her parents Buzz and Betty Mills; children: Sami and Alex Khan; brother Michael Mills (spouse Alena); sisters Liza Lemaster-Sandbank, and Naseem Jenkins; her aunt and cousins. A gathering for family and friends will be held on Thursday, October 31, 2024, where the family will be present at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD to receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM until the time of her service which will begin at 11:00 AM. Her celebration of life will continue with light refreshments at St. Joseph Catholic Community, Chaminade Center Hall, 915 Liberty Rd, Sykesville, MD 21784. Kelly was a fierce warrior, battling breast cancer for 5 years and she did it her way. While she fought valiantly, in the end, God gave her the victory and she “will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”, (Psalm 23).
