Mr. James "Jim" Jay Hursey

James “Jim” Jay Hursey, age 61, of Odenton and previously of Finksburg, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Born March 29, 1964, in Aurora, Colorado, he was the son of the late Ralph and Betty Mae (Lange) Hursey. He was the beloved husband of 35 years to Theresa “Terri” Jean Gagen-Hursey. A gifted athlete in his youth, Jim played and excelled at basketball, football, and lacrosse. For his success, Jim was later inducted into the Liberty High School Athletics Hall of Fame. After high school, Jim continued a remarkable basketball career at Western Maryland College (McDaniel). Once his athletic career ended, Jim became a super fan of his children’s athletic careers. Jim could consistently be heard in the stands with his bellowing cheers and thunderous clapping. Professionally, Jim was a respected and accomplished healthcare executive. He served as Executive Vice President of GBMC and St. Joseph Medical Center and concluded his impressive career as the COO of Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. His leadership, integrity, and tireless work ethic left an enduring mark on every institution he served. Jim was beloved by his colleagues and was consistently seen as a mentor and a friend. Beyond the serious athlete and businessman, Jim was a goof at heart, teasing and laughing with family. Jim was a dedicated husband, father, brother, and friend whose strength, humor, and unwavering love for his family defined his life. He had a unique way of getting you to laugh, even when you were not exactly in the right mood for it. He will be greatly missed by those around him as they cherish the memory of the man they knew. Jim is survived by his wife, Terri; their children, Meaghan Hursey, Ryan Hursey and wife Haley, and Devin Hursey; and his siblings, Pat Beucler and husband Fred, Sharon Hursey, Terry Koogle and husband Chip, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, William Hursey, and is survived by William’s wife, Mary Lynn Hursey. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 2–4 PM and 6–8 PM at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the same location.
