Howard Mitchell "Mickey" Day

Howard Mitchell “Mickey” Day, 62, of Marriottsville, MD passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on April 21, 1961, in Frederick, MD to Howard Calvin Day and Eileen Mullinix Day. He was the loving husband of 37 years to Susan Marie Sutton Day. Mickey was the Vice President and General Manager of his family’s business, Farm and Home Service, with locations in Sykesville, Ellicott City, Brunswick, Taneytown and Poolesville. He was a graduate of Glenelg High School and then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Agriculture at the University of Maryland. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Marriottsville, attending services there for his entire life. Mickey was a 4-H member from childhood and became a Howard County 4-H All Star. He raised many livestock projects throughout his 4-H career and was instrumental in starting the Howard County 4-H Beef Club as the 4-H representative. He was part of the 4-H livestock judging team attending national competitions and later served as coach of the team. His years in 4-H fostered a love of community service, and Mickey spent much of his 62 years giving back to his community. Mickey joined the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department in 1977. He served the WFVFD in many capacities and over the years rose in the ranks of leadership from lieutenant to his current position as chief. In addition to the West Friendship department, he also served the Howard County Volunteer Firefighters Association as president. His passion for training and education in the fire department led him to become a MFRI instructor in July 2001. While he was involved in numerous aspects of the fire department, a key accomplishment was collaborating with others to relocate station 3 from Frederick Road to the new facility at the corner of routes 32 and 99. The Howard County Fair was another important piece of Mickey’s life. He became a fair board member in 1983 after being nominated from the floor and took on this membership with enthusiasm. He served the fair board on many committees and was president of the fair for multiple terms serving 1999-2002, 2008-2010, and most recently from 2015 to 2023. During fair week Mickey could be found making the rounds on the fairgrounds to make sure all was running smoothly. Mickey was a farmer at heart, helping on the family farm as needed from baling hay to running the stack wagon, fertilizing the fields, or any other job required to run a farm and help his family. He was also part of the Howard County Farm Bureau and the Howard County Farm Preservation Board. The theme throughout Mickey’s life has been serving Howard County and it was important to him to work toward making this small part of the earth a great place to live, work, find friendship, and purpose. Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are sister and brother-in-law Donna and Douglas Full, father-in-law Ivan C. Sutton, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Vivienne and Bill McGinnis. Nieces and nephews: Brittany Douglas and husband Dustin, Jimmy Full, Amber McGinnis, Bridgett McGinnis, Russell McGinnis and his fiancé, Michaela Myrick-Whittaker. Great nephew Isaac and great niece Raelynn, as well as many other cousins and relatives. The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Howard County Fairgrounds, Annex Building, 2210 Fairgrounds Road, West Friendship, MD 21794. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., also at the fairgrounds. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Marriottsville, MD.
