Mrs Hilda Outlaw Horton

Hilda O. Horton Age 85 of Westminster Hilda Outlaw Horton, 85 of Westminster, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Born March 20, 1927 in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Don Albert and Lizzie Simmons Outlaw of Kinston,N.C. She was the wife of the late Roy Horton. She had been the director of Dietary Services at Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville. Hilda graduated from Berea College in Berea, KY. She served her internship at Watts Hospital in Durham,N.C.. In 1953 she worked as the only dietician at Lenoir Memorial Hospital Kinston,N.C., then moved to Mary Elizabeth Hospital in Raleigh N.C. In 1958 she worked for South Hospital Food Management Company in Charleston, WV. In 1960 she married Roy Horton and they moved to Maryland. In 1962, she started to work for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She worked at Rosewood Hospital Center and was then recruited to work at Springfield Hospital Center in 1966, as the director of Dietary Services. At that time, Springfield Hospital Center was the largest state facility with 3400 patients. Hilda retired in 1987 after 25 years of service, including 21 years of perfect attendance. Hilda was an active member of the Maryland Dietetic Association where she was the co-chair of the therapy section and spearheaded the writing and printing of the first MDA Renal Booklet, now sold nationally. She served as an officer and on several committees as well. The most important thing to Hilda was her family. After her retirement, Hilda's passion was volunteering. She volunteered and cooked for the Springfield Patient Canteen for several years and at the Bear's Paw in Ellicott City, MD. She volunteered with "We Care" and sewed thousands of items for oncology patients to use, including anxiety quilts used at St. Agnes Hospital. She volunteered on the Library Committee at Carroll Lutheran Village for 5 years and had lived at Carroll Lutheran Village since 2005. Surviving are sisters Peggy Stubs of Carroll Lutheran Village Westminster,Md., Lottie Outlaw Whaley and her husband Virgil of Kinston,N.C., brother Albert J. Outlaw and his wife Jo Ann of Kinston,N.C., 6 nieces, 3 nephews and 15 great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Charles Stubs. Interment will take place in North Carolina at a later date.
