Helen F. Howes

Helen Frances Howes, age 88, of Sykesville, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at home, surrounded by her family. She was born on January 21, 1937, in Baltimore, MD to the late Samuel Bascom Richeson and Louise Marie Gerstenlauer Richeson. She was the wife of Richard T. Howes, Sr. for 66 years. Helen was a graduate of Sykesville High School, Class of 1955. After graduation she went to work as a telephone operator for 10 years before becoming a full time homemaker and raising her children. She enjoyed sewing, puzzles, making clothes for her family and her Victorian dolls and she loved collecting teddy bears. But most of all she loved spending time with her grandsons and great-grandsons. Helen was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Sykesville. Helen was also an avid Orioles fan. Surviving in addition to her husband, Richard are daughter Julianna Howes, son, Richard T. "Tommy" Howes, Jr. and his wife Anne all of Sykesville; grandsons: Trey Howes and wife Courtney and Justin Howes; great-grandsons: Ridley and Henry Howes; brother-in-law Richard VanFossen, nieces and nephews: Linda Rottman, Mike Arrington, Bryan VanFossen and Melissa VanFossen. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Hope Arrington and Kate VanFossen and nephew Timothy Arrington and brother-in-law George Arrington. A service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Glenwood, MD.
