Gary George Rupert

Gary George Rupert Age 70 of Eldersburg Gary George Rupert, 70 of Eldersburg, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster due to natural causes. Born February 11, 1940 in Bloomsburg, PA, he was the son of the late George L. and Prudence Lore Rupert. He was the husband of Nancy McFerran Rupert, his wife of 47 years. Raised in Bloomsburg, PA, he graduated from Bloomsburg High School, and from Bloomsburg University, where he was a three sport participant, with a degree in elementary education. He received a Masters degree in Administration from Temple University, Philadelphia in 1970. He taught in the Plymouth Meeting School District, Plymouth, PA from 1963-1970. He was the assistant basketball coach at Philadelphia College of Textile Sciences from 1966-1970, where they were the National Champions in 1970. He was the basketball coach at Johns Hopkins University from 1970-1977, where the team won the Middle Atlantic Conference championship and were the NCAA regional champions. He was at the University of Maryland Baltimore County from 1977 until his retirement in 2005. While at UMBC, he served in the Athletic Department from 1977-1989. He served on various NCAA committees. He was an NCAA basketball referee evaluator. At retirement he served as Associated Director of Development at UMBC. He is a member of the UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia University Hall of Fame. He was the first president and one of the founders of the Taylorsville-Winfield Lions Athletic Association. He was a former Winfield Lions Club member. He was the former youth director of Carroll Square Association. He was a member of Wesley Freedom Methodist Church. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, gardening, reading and travel. He was a man of great wisdom and sensitivity, who influenced the lives of countless students and athletes. Surviving in addition to his wife are sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Ava Rupert of Lynchburg, VA, Greg and Michelle Rupert of Haymarket, VA, and Geoff and Julie Rupert of Baltimore, grandchildren Madison and Samuel Rupert of Lynchburg, VA, Joseph, Matthew and Benjamin Rupert of Haymarket, VA, and Molly Rupert of Baltimore, special family Kurt and Karen Cassell and children Cody, Tyler, Hanna and Garrett of Marriottsville, brother and sister-in-law Jim and Vicky Rupert of Bloomsburg, PA, sister-in-law and husband Jane and Alfred Sharman, brother-in-law and wife David and Manuela McFerran, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10am at Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church, 961 Johnsville Rd., Eldersburg. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville on Friday from 3-5 and 7-9pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gary G.
