Mrs. Doris E. Shoemaker

Doris E. Shoemaker, age 93, of Mt. Airy, formerly of Woodbine, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mt. Airy. Born January 16, 1925, in Westminster, MD she was the daughter of the late Oscar C. Essich and Lola Myers Essich. She was the wife of the late Robert A. Shoemaker who passed away in March 2008. Doris was a graduate of Westminster High School, class of 1942. After graduation, she worked for Baltimore Gas & Electric in Westminster, MD. She met and married Robert Shoemaker in 1945. Doris spent many happy years on the family farm on Hoods Mill Road in Woodbine, MD helping Robert with his farming. Her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren provided many happy times. She embraced many life-long neighbors and friends as well. She and Robert enjoyed travel to Hawaii and the western U.S. Doris retired from Carroll County Public Schools where she was an office assistant at Sykesville High School and health aide at Eldersburg Elementary. They were active in the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry and were long time members of Messiah Lutheran Church. Doris helped support the local Lions Club with their monthly dinner meetings at the church. She was active in the church after marrying Robert until around 2009. After Robert passed away, Doris moved to Lorien, Mt. Airy. Her early years at Lorien found her welcoming new residents and enjoying many activities. She is survived by daughters and son-in-law: Priscilla Slavin of Bel Air, Mairi and Robert Sturges of Naperville, IL and Judith and Steven Jackson of Mt. Airy; brother, Donald Essich of Westminster; sister, Rosalie Crowley of Charlotte, NC and grandchildren: Abby and Chris Jermal of Los Angeles, CA, Kate and Ben Martin of San Pedro, CA, Eric and Tina Jackson of New Market, MD, Leif and Sara Jackson of Monrovia, MD and Lucas Jackson of Baltimore. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by son-in-law: Gary Slavin and sister, Gloria Pond. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 21, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel (6416 Sykesville Road) Sykesville. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018, at 11am at Messiah Lutheran Church (5600 Old Washington Road) Sykesville. Interment will follow in Highland View Cemetery.
