Mr David Marshall Scaggs

David Marshall Scaggs, a resident of Copper Ridge, in Sykesville, MD, and former resident of Penn National, PA and Olney, MD, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 after being diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration in 2008. Dave was surrounded by his loving family. Dave was born on October 13, 1947 in Baltimore, MD, the only child of the late Clinton and Elizabeth (Porter) Scaggs. Dave grew up in Catonsville, MD and graduated from Catonsville High School in 1965. He went on to attend Towson State College, where he earned his degree in Physical Education and played for Towson’s soccer and lacrosse teams. He earned a Masters in Administration from George Washington University. Dave is survived by his wife, Anna, of 47 years and by his three children, Allyson Sealfon (Dan), Stephanie Shuken (Michael) and Jon David Scaggs (Kelly). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Ryan Todd, Zachary Louis, Scott Porter, Georgina Eden, David Moses, Griffin David, Travis Marshall. Dave worked for Montgomery County Public Schools for 30 years, teaching and coaching at North Bethesda Junior High, C.W. Woodward High, Richard Montgomery High, Montgomery Blair High and finished his career at Sherwood High School where he was Athletic Director. He was named Montgomery County Coach of the Year three times throughout his career. He was instrumental in forming both the Montgomery County and Maryland State Coaches Associations. After retiring from MCPS, Dave and Anna moved to Pennsylvania where Dave managed a warehouse for On Campus Marketing. Dave’s passion for serving others continued into his retirement as he served as a Stephen’s Minister. He enjoyed playing golf, visiting with his grandkids and traveling. Dave’s family will be receiving visitors at Haight Funeral Home (6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, Maryland) on Monday, January 29th from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. A Celebration of Dave’s life will take place at Calvary United Methodist Church (403 S. Main Street, Mount Airy, MD) on Saturday, February 3rd at 11am. Dave’s family will receive guests from 9:30am-11am at Calvary prior to the service. A luncheon reception will follow. The service will be live streamed through Calvary’s Facebook page (Calvary-MtAiry) for those unable to attend.
