Mr. David E. Kartalia

David E. Kartalia, age 73, of Westminster passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 11. 2015 at his home. David was deeply loved and widely admired for his intellect, enormous heart, and sense of humor. He was respected as a lawyer for his expertise, as well as his sensitivity, integrity, and compassion. A graduate of the University of Michigan and then the University of Chicago Law School, he began his career with the Federal government before making the courageous switch to private practice in Westminster, a town where he knew nobody but ended up making a wonderful life for himself and his family beginning in 1976. He will be remembered for his unique and wide ranging interests including cultivating heirloom plants, raising exotic poultry, distance running, cooking, carpentry, European travel, and researching anything and everything that piqued his curiosity. He also had a passion for learning foreign languages and was adept enough in several to read literature and newspapers from around the world. Proud to survive and to continue his legacy of love include, his wife, Jill Kartalia; mother, Rebecca Kartalia, children and their spouses, Stephen David and Natalie Kartalia, Sarah Kartalia and Dominique Pozzo of Toulouse, France and Anna and Paul Ferguson; grandchildren, Clement David Pozzo, Emma Galloway Kartalia, Annie Sullivan Kartalia, Jack Thomas Ferguson, Charlie Mitchell Ferguson and Samuel David Ferguson and siblings and their spouses, Diane Kartalia and her husband, Ted, Peter James Kartalia and his wife, Dennielle C. and numerous adored in-laws, nephews, and nieces. He joins his beloved family members: father Mitchell, sister Janet and brother Mitch. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2 to 5 pm at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will be held on Sunday at 10 AM with his friend and pastor, Dave Bare as celebrant. Interment will follow in Meadow Branch Cemetery, Westminster. In lieu of flowers, David’s family requests that donations be made to support The Hope Project at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, founded by his daughter, Anna and which he was an ardent supporter. The Hope Project was founded to remind us all of the important role Hope plays in living well.
