Mrs. Carrie Amelia Costley

Carrie Amelia Costley, 94, was born on December 22, 1927, in Cooksville, Maryland. She departed this life on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at 2:50 pm after a lengthy illness at her home in Cookville, Maryland. Carrie attended Cookville Elementary/High School graduating in 1945. In 1946 she married, the late Jennings M. Costley and from that union 5 children were born. She spent most of her married life as a housewife. Carrie was widowed at the young age 38, and spent many years raising her children as a single parent, with the assistance of her parents. Carrie was raised in the church as a young child and throughout her life dedicated herself to serving the Lord. She was a member of Full Gospel Baptist Church from 1944 until her death. She was recognized as one of the oldest members of the church and affectionately, respectfully, given the title of “Mother of the Church”. During her many years she enjoyed serving the Lord as a Deaconess, singing on the choir, where she would memorize the page numbers of many songs and hymns out of the Baptist Hymnal book. Carrie also worked on other committees or anywhere she could be of assistance. One of her most loved activities was attending weekly Bible Study. She was an avid Bible reader and studied the word diligently. Aside from being a doting grandparent, Carrie for many years assisted young families and friends in caring for their children while their parents worked. She did not hold back her love, rather generously surrounded them all with it. She was affectionately known as “Miss Carrie” to all children. Carrie enjoyed many activities. She was a participant at the Glenwood Senior Center for many years until her illness prevented her from going. But when there, she loved to go bowling, attending field trips, doing many arts and crafts that she loved to display at her home or give away as gifts. Carrie’s hobbies included reading the daily newspaper, doing word search puzzles for hours, and watching TV especially the Gaither Gospel Hour on Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. Carrie leaves to mourn 3 daughters, Brenda Costley-Jordan (Thomas), Randallstown, MD., Rev. Ruth Olorunfemi (Alex) Cooksville, MD., Deborah Costley, Ellicott, City, MD., 1 God-son Charles A. Anderson, Laurel, MD., and 1 daughter-in-law Theresa Geier Costley, Colombia, MD., 9 grandchildren, Monique Costley-Norris, Touro D. Costley, Jr. (Ashley), Neil Moore, Tamara Costley, Raymond Bowie III (Erica), Lisa Bowie, JuLeia Jordan, Samson Olorunfemi and David Olorunfemi (Diana)., 11 great-grand children, Devon Norris, Ciarra Sinclair, Kion Norris, Fayth Bowie, Mya Johnson, Julius Sinclair, Touro D, Costley III, Taylor Costley, Marcus Moore, Ariana Honesto and Tessa Costley. 1 great-great grand child Nevaeh Norris and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Carrie was pre-deceased by her husband Jennings M. Costley, her parents, William H. Savoy, Sr. and Lillie E. Savoy, 2 brothers, Emory Savoy and William H. Savoy, Jr., 4 sisters, Margaret Savoy, Beatrice Savoy, Iantha Coates and Lacedonia Ross, 2 children Touro D. Costley, Sr., and Cynthia WIlliams and 1 grandson Terrence Costley. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 18, 2022, from 11 am - 12 pm at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow on Monday at 12 pm with Reverend Charles Y.
