C. Eleanor Day Mercer

C. Eleanor (Day) Mercer died peacefully on March 14, 2025, at Fairhaven in Sykesville. She was born at home in Sykesville on August 20, 1934, to Clara W. and Robert E. Day. She was a graduate of Sykesville High School, class of 1952. She married Edwin H. Mercer at St. Paul’s Methodist Church on May 2, 1953. Eleanor and Edwin were married 49 years before his death in 2002. She is survived by children Rachel Mercer, Nancy Boguski (Peter), Edwin Mercer, Jr., grandchildren Hannah and Noah Boguski, and brother M. Hanford (Gus) Day, sisters-in-law Esther Mercer, Grace Davis, Nessa Klein, brother-in-law Richard Mercer and many nieces and nephews. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, husband Edwin, and sister Elizabeth (Betty) D. Mercer and husband Robert (Petie) Mercer, David and Helen Mercer, Harold Mercer, Christopher and Yvonne Mercer, James W. Davis, Sarah H. Day and nephew Mark Mercer. After graduation from high school she worked many different jobs, several for the State of MD. She worked at the Milk CO-OP, school bus driver for Golliday’s Bus Service for several years, the State Police Headquarters in the Uniform Crime Reporting office and then retiring from Comptroller of the Treasury office in Baltimore. Eleanor became a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church after her marriage to Edwin. She was an active member, serving over the years on the altar guild in different positions, chaired and worked in many capacities at the Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers, helped make apple butter for the Country Fair, and served on the vestry. When her daughters were in the Girl Scouts she served as the Area Director for the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. Eleanor was enthusiastic about cooking and gardening of both vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed collecting cookbooks, making pickles and several kinds of jams and preserves. Her shrimp dip was popular with everyone, as well as her sticky buns. It would be a great day when you could smell her sticky buns in the oven. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and playing cards. A graveside service will be held at 11:30am on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Mt. View Cemetery, 2150 Mt. View Road, Marriottsville, MD. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Fairhaven Chapel, 7200 Third Avenue, Sykesville, MD followed by a reception at Fairhaven.
