Col. August Paul Boerschel

August Paul Boerschel, 84, of Woodstock, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on February 2, 2022. Born June 9, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late August Julius and Monica Catherine (nee McLean) Boerschel. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Sally Ann (nee Hathaway) Boerschel (2020) and his son James August Boerschel (2016). He is survived by daughter Lynn Marie Boerschel as well as many extended family and friends. Paul graduated from the Shrine of the Little Flower School in Baltimore, Loyola High School at Blakefield in Towson, and Loyola College (now University) in Baltimore. A true Catholic education. From an early age, Paul spent weekends and summers in Woodstock with his grandparents, who had purchased a 15-acre chicken farm in 1930. He lived to become one of the oldest and longest living residents of Woodstock. It is there that he met Sally when her family moved to Woodstock in 1945, purchasing a grand Victorian home and 23 acres. They were 8 years old at the time and began dating in high school. They were married at The Shrine of the Little Flower on January 24, 1959. Upon graduation from college, Paul's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program launched his Army career. In the summer of 1959, Paul and Sally went to Fort Bragg, NC; Fort Sill, OK; Fort Hood, TX; and then Okinawa, Japan for his 3-year assignment. He served as a proud member of the 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, Commander of 5th Battalion 20th Special Forces Group, and culminating his career as the Commander of the 110th Artillery Battalion of the Maryland National Guard, retiring as a full Colonel. His jump log was filled with over 150 memorable parachute adventures. Soon after returning from Japan, they built their first home in Woodstock on a parcel of land sold to Paul by his grandfather. They started their family, first adopting Jimmy in 1964 and then Lynn in 1966. After several compelling jobs, including Christmas delivery for the Post Office in his father-in-law's beat up pickup truck alongside his brother-in-law Joe, the phone company, and the American Can Company, he spent 30 years working for the Healthcare Finance Administration (HCFA) as a systems analyst. Paul enjoyed a good game of golf, even though he said he wasn't any good at it. It was all about the time spent with friends chasing a little white ball. He was an avid reader, mostly of military and world history. Often, he could be found working on a project, preferably outside. He loved to mow the lawn or run the tractor. As a city boy growing up, he never would have imagined talking about the various types of hay. Paul and Sally spent many years traveling the world with family and friends. They enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and in the Caribbean. But there was no place they would rather be than Woodstock, together.
