Alberta Jean Sonnemann

Alberta Jean Sonnemann, known lovingly as Jean, passed away on April 10, 2026, at home in Sykesville, Maryland, at the age of 86. She was born on July 17, 1939, in Crellin, West Virginia. Jean was born and raised on the family farm, where she learned the values of hard work, humility, and family loyalty that guided her throughout her life. For many years, Jean worked as a caterer for the former Doctor’s Hospital and Anne Arundel Catering. Jean found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed working puzzles, making quilts, cooking, and playing Bingo at the South Carroll Senior Center. These interests reflected her patient and creative spirit, as well as her love of companionship and community. Whether she was piecing together a quilt, preparing a meal, or sharing laughter during a game of Bingo, Jean brought sincerity and joy to every moment. She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Fuller Reckart and Mearl Summers Reckart, and by her deceased siblings, Dale, Darrell, Bud, Robert, Kathleen “Kate,” Geraldine “Gerry,” Opal, Edna and Sue. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life. Jean is survived by her children, Carol Hill and her husband Christopher “Al,”, Thomas Sonnemann, Laura Beall and her husband Scott, Daniel L. Sonneman and his wife Angela, and Miriam Stephens and her husband Garry. She is also survived by her sisters, Florence "Sis", Peach, Tudy, and Nancy. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Sean and his wife Rachel, Amanda and her husband Nick, Chad, Tom and his wife Ari, Asa and her husband Corey, Janine, Briannah, Juel and her husband Bill, Alexis, Cheyenne, Nicholas, Branden, and Anna, as well as her great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jr., Blakely, and Dawson. Jean will be remembered for the love she gave so freely and the steady kindness she showed to family and friends alike. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date on the farm where she was born and raised.
