Mr. Carl Fisher Lehmann

CARL FISHER LEHMANN (1933-2013) Carl F. Lehmann, 79, of Marco Island, FL and Granite, MD, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, businessman, and friend, died on January 3rd near Marco Island, FL. Cause of death was cardiac arrest. As a businessman, Carl provided jobs for more than 100 employees manufacturing precision parts that were used in the Apollo Space Program and numerous national defense projects. Some of the parts Micro Miniature Machining manufactured remain on the moon to this day. Replicas of some parts are on display in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Carl was a thriving young man who enjoyed racing stock cars, riding motorcycles, serving in the Army National Guard, and working on all things mechanical when he contracted polio in his early twenties. After a long stay in the hospital, including over nine months in an iron lung, and with Ruthie’s loving encouragement, he survived and went on to positively impact those he loved and his community. He accomplished much more than many physically stronger men. While he lived with the physical limitations caused by polio, he did not let his limitations define him. Carl built a commercial office building to house his business and other tenants. He was President of the Maryland chapter of the National Tool and Die Association in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was proud of meeting President Ronald Reagan in his role as a small business owner and President of the Association. He was active in the Lions Club and served on the Boards of several banks. He used his inventive mind to create and solve many technical problems. After he sold the business, he bought a Komatsu bulldozer and took out a hill behind his house so he would have a better view of the family Christmas tree farm that spanned three generations. He loved to help people achieve their goals and make them laugh. He was quick with a joke and played many hands of cards. He was ahead of his time in never wanting to be wasteful – he shunned excesses of all kinds. This saying: “A good person does good merely by living,” fits. He set a fine example for his children, grandchildren and all who knew him. Carl was born in Granite, MD on July 5th, 1933 and married Ruthie, his sweetheart from Catonsville High School in 1954. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Inez (“Ruthie”) Lehmann (nee Sadler), his sisters, Ruth Chalker, Cleo Garriott and her husband Peter Garriott, Louise Klohr and her husband Edward Klohr; his children, Cindy Tallent and her husband Patrick Tallent, Bonnie von Rinteln and her husband James von Rinteln, Carl Michael Lehmann, Timothy Alfred Lehmann; his grandchildren Laura Bates and her husband Steven Bates, Elizabeth Warren and her husband Shane Warren, Chad Lehmann, Chelsie Lehmann, Jessica Tallent, Shelby Lehmann, Jordana Lehmann, Carli Lehmann; and his great grand-daughter Grace Lehmann. Friends may call at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel (6416 Sykesville Road) Sykesville, MD on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11 AM at Granite Presbyterian Church (10800 Old Court Road) Woodstock, MD. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
